Apple Unveils the New M5 MacBook Air

Apple has officially announced the next generation of its bestselling notebook — the MacBook Air with the new M5 chip. This update marks one of the biggest Air refreshes in recent years, with a substantial performance boost, doubled base storage, upgraded wireless technology, and expanded capabilities for AI and creative workflows.

A Big Upgrade Under the Hood

At the heart of the new MacBook Air is Apple’s M5 chip, a next-generation Apple Silicon processor that dramatically improves both general performance and on-device AI tasks. Compared with the prior M4-powered Air, the M5 delivers significantly faster CPU and GPU performance, with each GPU core now featuring a dedicated Neural Accelerator for handling complex machine-learning workloads. 

The M5’s unified architecture also includes faster memory bandwidth, enhancing multitasking and responsiveness for demanding apps ranging from video projects to machine learning models. 

Storage, Speed & Connectivity Boosts

One of the headline upgrades in this launch is storage:

• Base storage has doubled from prior models, now starting at 512 GB — a welcome change for users who previously had to pay extra for larger capacities. 
• Configurable up to 4 TB for power users and creators. 
• The new SSD delivers approximately 2× faster read/write speeds, accelerating workflows like media editing and large file transfers. 

Wireless connectivity gets an upgrade too: Apple has introduced its N1 wireless chip, enabling support for Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6, promising faster and more reliable connections. 

Design: Familiar, Yet Enhanced

The new MacBook Air keeps the thin, light, fanless aluminum design that defined its popularity, available in both 13-inch and 15-inch models. Key features include:

• Liquid Retina display with vivid colors and 500-nit brightness. 
• Up to 18-hour battery life — ideal for all-day use. 
• 12 MP Center Stage webcam with Desk View for video calls. 
• Two Thunderbolt 4 ports with support for up to two external displays, plus MagSafe charging. 
• A choice of classic colors including Sky Blue, Midnight, Starlight, and Silver. 

Pricing & Availability

Apple has adjusted prices slightly upward compared with the last generation:

• 13-inch M5 MacBook Air starts at roughly $1,099 in the U.S., up about $100 from the previous model’s entry price.
• 15-inch M5 MacBook Air starts around $1,299.
• However, if you consider that a base 13” M4 Air upgraded to 512GB storage was $1,199, this new M5 Air is actually $100 less than the M4.

Preorders begin today, March 4, with units expected to reach customers starting March 11.
