Apple’s CarPlay Gets a Major Makeover in iOS 26

Apple is poised to deliver one of the most significant updates to CarPlay since its debut in 2014. With the upcoming release of iOS 26—expected this fall for iPhone 11 and newer devices—the built-in driving interface gains a slew of big-ticket features spanning visual design, messaging convenience, real-time tools, and entertainment options.

1. Sophisticated “Liquid Glass” Design

At the heart of the CarPlay update is Apple’s new Liquid Glass aesthetic, a sleek, translucent interface language first introduced across iOS, macOS, and iPadOS. This floating, glass-like UI brings clarity and depth, dynamically adapting to light and dark themes. On the road, this translates to a cleaner, more expressive dashboard experience.

2. Improved Call & Message Notifications

Distracted driving is a focus—CarPlay now features compact “pill-style” notifications for incoming calls and messages, letting navigation remain visible while alerts appear unobtrusively. In addition, Emoji Tapbacks (e.g., ❤️👍😂) are now supported in CarPlay’s Messages app—closing a long-standing gap that frustrated users.Plus, you can now access pinned conversations right at the top, ensuring that top-priority chats stay easy to reach.

3. Widgets & Live Activities Integration

A landmark change: widgets and Live Activities arrive in standard CarPlay, no longer exclusive to the high-end “Ultra” version. Drivers can now access glanceable, scrollable widgets—ranging from calendar entries and HomeKit controls to smart-home status indicators—via a swipeable interface. Live Activities also appear on-screen, offering real-time updates on flights, ride shares, food deliveries, or sports scores—keeping essential info in view without distracting navigation.

4. Smart Display Zoom

New with iOS 26 is Smart Display Zoom, a setting that adapts CarPlay’s layout to any screen shape or size. By shrinking UI elements slightly, it allows an extra row of app icons to fit on the screen—ideal for widescreen or unconventional dashboards.

5. Interactive Multi-Touch Maps

Navigation gets more intuitive: CarPlay now supports full multi-touch gestures in map apps, letting drivers zoom and pan just like on their iPhones—if the vehicle’s screen allows.

6. Video Playback via AirPlay

For parked vehicles, CarPlay now supports video streaming via AirPlay, enabling iPhones to cast media—like saved movies or Apple TV+ content—right to the car’s display. This feature kicks in only when the car is stationary, and automakers must enable it for their vehicles.

7. Standardization of Ultra Features

Apple’s premium CarPlay Ultra—which debuted with dashboard integration and vehicle function control in Aston Martin models—is now influencing the broader CarPlay platform. Many Ultra features, such as compact alerts, widgets, and the Liquid Glass design, are now part of the standard experience.

Why These Changes Matter

● Safety through minimal distraction

Compact call alerts, less intrusive messaging, and glanceable widgets reduce the need to shift attention away from the road.

● Aesthetics that complement dashboards

Liquid Glass brings a seamless, modern look to in-car UI, making CarPlay feel like a native part of vehicle displays.

● Expanded utility for everyday life

Widgets, Live Activities, and multi-touch maps give drivers powerful customization, real-time insight, and better navigation control—all while driving.

● Entertainment on the go

AirPlay video streaming turns your parked car into a mini-theater—a great perk for charging breaks or idle waits.

● Broadening Ultra-class features

By folding Ultra design and functionality into standard CarPlay, Apple delivers a richer experience to all users while still offering deeper integration in premium vehicles.

What’s Next?

  • Launch timeline: iOS 26’s public release is expected this fall (September timeframe), with developer and public betas available throughout summer.
  • Hardware compatibility: Requires iPhone 11 or newer; CarPlay upgrades available in vehicles already supporting CarPlay. Some features (e.g. AirPlay video, multi-touch, Smart Zoom) depend on manufacturer support.
  • CarPlay Ultra rollout: Debuting in Aston Martin in 2025, with extensions to Hyundai, Kia, Genesis, and others planned for 2026.

The Bottom line

With iOS 26, Apple delivers its most expansive CarPlay overhaul to date—melding stylish visuals, smarter notifications, real-time widgets, interactive navigation, and even video playback abroad—all while upholding safety standards. Whether you’re a daily commuter or occasional road-tripper, the CarPlay you know is poised to become smarter, calmer, and more cinematic.
