Could Apple be Showing Us The Future Apple Watch?

If you are a regular follower of Apple Tech Talk, you know that we generally don’t engage in rumors or speculate on what future Apple products might be. But sometimes, things are so obvious, that we can’t resist the temptation.

If you subscribe to Apple TV+, you have undoubtedly heard of a new movie streaming on the channel called Swan Song.

This 2021 flick has an all-star cast including, Mahershala Ali, Naomi Harris and Glenn Close.

Set at some point in the not too distant future, a loving husband and father, played by Mahershala Ali is diagnosed with a terminal illness, he’s presented with a controversial alternative solution to shield his family from his loss – replace himself with a carbon copy clone.

It’s no surprise that most, if not all of the movies on AppleTV+ prominently display more than their share of Apple products. MacBooks, iMacs, iPads and iPhones are the gadgets of choice for any technology needs that support the story line. So we couldn’t help but wonder if Apple was providing a teaser for the careful viewer.

One of the Apple products we didn’t see in the movie was an Apple Watch, or did we?

On more than one occasion, Naomie Harris, who plays Ali’s wife, is seen wearing a watch with a round face. The watch appears to be attached to the all to familiar silver mesh style band that Apple often shows with their Apple Watch advertising.

It’s hard to tell for sure, but it does not appear that the watch face has a conventional watch face or hands. Instead, it appears to be a blank screen, which also makes us think this could be a new Apple Watch design.

Granted, if you look closer you will notice that the watch band does not appear to have the usual magnetic mounting lugs that has been used on the Apple Watch since its introduction. But it also stands to reason that if Apple was to introduce a radical redesign of the Apple Watch, a new style band would not be out of line.

There is also evidence that at the very least, this is something that Apple has considered.

In May 2018 a patent for a round Apple Watch was approved. As you can see from the diagram filed with the patent application, the watch not only has a round face, but the band appears to pass under the watch face, not unlike what was seen in the movie. What’s most interesting, is that this patent was filed in January 2016, not long after the first Apple Watch launched in April 2015.

If you compare the patent diagram to the watch seen in the movie, they seem to be almost identical.

The Bottom Line

Just because Apple filed a patent for a round faced Apple Watch, and that a watch that looks almost identical is prominently displayed in Swan Song, means they will actually release it. By the same token, if Apple had no intention of releasing a round watch design, would they go to the trouble of even making a prototype or a model to be used in the movie? Or is this perhaps an easter egg, planted by Apple to generate excitement for a new product we may see in the not too distant future?
