Synology® Active Backup for Business reduces storage space and backup time for global cosmetic brand

SHISEIDO Taiwan recently implemented Synology’s Active Backup for Business to create a centralized backup for their virtual machines, employee’s PCs, and internal file servers. With Active Backup for Business and its deduplication ability, SHISEIDO Taiwan was able to reduce their needed storage space by over 50%.

Ransomware attacks and critical data backup a growing problem

Established in 1957, SHISEIDO Taiwan was the first overseas subsidiary of Shiseido Company, LTD, one of the oldest cosmetic companies in the world. In 2010, SHISEIDO Taiwan implemented Synology NAS devices to back up their large number of daily transaction records. With over 500 employees at their headquarters, and up to 600GB of changed data a day, it was imperative that they had proper backup tools to ensure their daily data was saved.

On top of that, in 2017, some of their employee’s computers fell victim to ransomware attacks. In order to protect critical data, Zhang Jiao-Hao, the Manager of their Information System Planning Department, started to look for cross-platform backup solutions. After trying out several well-known backup software options, he determined that these solutions were costly, ineffective, and had complicated user interfaces.

Active Backup for Business provides best solution

Once SHISEIDO Taiwan learned that Synology’s Active Backup for Business could centrally back up data from client PCs, VMware vSphere virtual machines, and Windows servers to a NAS without purchasing other backup tools or costly software licenses, they joined the beta program for a 3-month trial in June of 2018.

“After tests, we found Active Backup for Business has astonishing backup speeds and works wonders on deleting duplicate data,” Zhang Jiao-Hao, Manager of Information System Planning at SHISEIDO Taiwan. “It only took up 28TB out of the total 58TB on the server. We are quite satisfied with the overall performance.”

As the business grew, SHESEIDO Taiwan added VMware VSphere to create virtual hosts, and they currently have 55 in place now. Their original backup tools used to take 6-8 hours to complete a backup task, but after implementing Synology Active Backup for Business, backup time considerably reduced the task by over 50%. Additionally, if they ever needed to recover virtual machine backup data, they could do so in 15 minutes.

“When a system crash occurs, employees can perform bare-metal backup using a bootable USB recovery drive or file-level restoration via the intuitive user interface, which efficiently shortens the maintenance time and puts IT resources to good use,” said Zhang.

SHISEIDO Taiwan plans to purchase more Synology storage devices in 2019 and use Synology Active Backup for Business to perform backup tasks for all of their office PCs and POS terminals in brand counters across Taiwan.
