Apple Offering Refurbished iPhone 6s and 6s Plus

It appears that Apple has updated its Refurbished Product Page to now offer refurbished iPhone 6s and 6s Plus models.

Prices for a 16GB iPhone 6s is $449.00 which is a 15% discount from the original full price.  The same 15% discount appears to apply to other models as well.

What is a Refurbished iPhone

Here is how Apple describes their refurbished products.

Apple Certified Refurbished Products are pre-owned Apple products that undergo Apple’s stringent refurbishment process prior to being offered for sale. While only some units are returned due to technical issues, every unit is evaluated to ensure it meets Apple’s quality standards.

Each Apple Certified Refurbished Product:is fully tested (including full burn-in testing)

• is refurbished with replacement parts for any defective modules identified in testin
• is put through a thorough cleaning process and inspectio
• is repackaged (including appropriate manuals, cables, new boxes, etc.
• includes either the Operating System originally shipped with the unit or, in some cases, a more recent versio
• is placed into a Final QA inspection prior to being added to sellable refurbished stock.

All Apple refurbished iPhone models (as well as all other Apple refurbished products) carry a one year manufacturer’s warranty.  You can also purchase Apple Care to get the same extended warranty available on a new iPhone.

All refurbished iPhone models are sold unlocked (read our report on what is an unlocked iPhone here) and SIM free so you can activate it on any network.

Apple does not offer the monthly payment plan and annual upgrade program that is available for new iPhone models but they do have special financing available through Barclaycard with Apple Rewards program, which provides 6, 12 or 18 month, no interest financing, depending on the amount of your purchase.  You can read more about that program here.

Available Refurbished iPhone Models

A check of the refurbished iPhone page showed both 16GB models for the iPhone 6s and both 16GB and 64GB models for the iPhone 6s Plus.  All of the models were available in all of the usual colors.

All iPhone models are available with free standard shipping, next day shipping for a slight additional charge or free pickup at the Apple Store of your choice.

The Bottom Line

Other than a brief period in 2007, Apple has not sold a refurbished iPhone on its own site.  If you wanted a refurbished iPhone you were forced to deal with independent third party companies.  If you are looking to upgrade your iPhone while saving some money, you can’t do better than purchasing a certified refurbished iPhone directly from Apple.
