Meross Smart Wi-Fi Plug Mini – Unboxing

Meross Smart Plug - Unboxing

In the box are 2 Meross Smart Wi-Fi Plug Mini (Model MSS115), a User Guide and a Matter Guide.

The smart plug measures 1.9” x 1.9” x 1.2” (not including the plug pins). This is smaller than other smart plugs we have seen and the small size makes it easy to place in any regular 3-prong outlet.

On the side of the plug is a button with an LED indicator.

This button is used to set up the plug. After activation, the button acts as a manual on / off switch for the plug.

Meross Smart Wi-Fi Plug Mini – Specifications

The Meross Smart Wi-Fi Plug Mini operates on standard 120V AC current and provides the same 120V output. However, the plug is only rated for 10 amp maximum load. Since most electric outlets are rated for 15 amps, be mindful of what you plug into the smart plug. High draw items like a hair dryer, portable heater, etc. would overload the smart plug but not necessarily trip the circuit breaker controlling the actual outlet.

The Meross Smart Wi-Fi Plug Mini supports IEEE 802.11 b/g/n, 2.4 GHz and requires IPv6 connectivity. It will work with any iPhone running iOS 16.1 or later and Bluetooth 4.2 or later. For Android users,. It requires Android 8.1 or later.

The Meross Smart Wi-Fi Plug Mini works with the Apple Home app, the Alexa app and the Google Home app. However, to use those apps requires a hub device and then only provides local control of the attached device. Instead, we decided to use the free Meross app, available in the App Store.

Meross Smart Wi-Fi Plug Mini – Set-up

We were pleasantly surprised at how easy it was to set up the Meross Smart Wi-Fi Plug Mini.

We connect the plug into a standard outlet. The button on the side started out as solid amber indicating it was initializing. Within a few seconds, the button started to alternately flash between amber and green. This is the indication that the is ready to pair with your home network.

After installing the Meross app and creating an account, we simply pressed the “+” sign at the top of the Home screen. That brings you to a screen where you select the device category you are setting up. From there, you are asked to select the device model you are setting up.

On the top of each plug is a QR code. The app opens your camera so you can scan the code.

Because of the location of the plug, we couldn’t align our iPhone camera with the QR code. Fortunately, Meross anticipated something like that. We were given an option to enter the code number printed on the same label as the QR code. Once we did that, the app linked the plug to our network.

We did get a message that our device required a hub, but as we later determined, that only applies if you are trying to use one of the other apps.

With the set-up complete, you now have the ability to schedule the times you want the plugged-in device on and off. You also have the ability to group multiple plugs together and have all of the plugged-in devices controlled with the same push of a button.

The Bottom Line

Smart plugs are certainly not new in the IoT (Internet of Things) world. We have looked at other smart plugs and while they all work about the same, we found the set-up of the Meross Smart Wi-Fi Plug Mini, one of the easiest. The small size of the plug combined with the Meross app made our set-up quick and easy. And the Matter integration let’s you use the Meross Smart Wi-Fi Plug Mini across a variety of platforms.

The Meross Smart Wi-Fi Plug Mini comes with a 1-year warranty.
